What should you know about a venous lake on the lip?

A venous lake is a small collection of dilated veins close to the surface of the lip. It may feel soft, flatten with gentle pressure, and refill when pressure is released. Colour can range from blue to violet or dark purple, and the spot may become more visible when the lip hangs down or after warmth. Its appearance can overlap with other vascular, pigmented, or occasionally concerning lesions, so colour alone cannot provide a diagnosis.

Have a new, persistent, enlarging, bleeding, crusted, or firm lip spot assessed by a clinician. Avoid puncturing it or trying to remove it at home. Examination may be enough, while an uncertain lesion may need further testing.
