What should you know about melanoma throat cancer?

Melanoma develops from pigment-producing cells. Finding it in the throat may mean melanoma has spread from another location, although a melanoma beginning in this area is possible. An ear, nose, and throat specialist may examine the mouth and throat with a small camera, and a biopsy can identify the tumour type. Scans help show whether nearby lymph nodes or distant organs are involved. A persistent sore throat, trouble swallowing, a neck lump, mouth bleeding, ear pain, or a Hoarse Voice can have several causes. A symptom does not by itself establish melanoma.

Arrange specialist assessment and bring details of any previous melanoma, skin changes, biopsies, and scans. Ask how the biopsy will be reviewed and whether further imaging is needed. Depending on the tumour's location and spread, treatment may involve Tumour Removal Surgery, Radiotherapy, or Chemotherapy. Your team may also involve speech and swallowing specialists to protect communication, eating, and drinking during care.

Get emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat or neck swelling, heavy bleeding, or a sudden change in alertness. Contact your clinical team promptly for worsening swallowing, repeated choking, dehydration, new weakness, or a hoarse voice that is progressing. Airway symptoms can worsen quickly and need immediate assessment.

Ask where the melanoma most likely began, what the biopsy shows, whether lymph nodes or other organs are involved, and which treatment goal applies to you. Discuss how treatment could affect speech, swallowing, taste, and breathing, plus what support is available if eating or drinking becomes difficult.
