What should you know about melanoma surgical treatment?

A dermatologist or surgeon may first remove the whole suspicious spot so a laboratory can examine it. If melanoma is confirmed, the operation may be widened to remove a planned margin around the original site. The amount of tissue depends on the tumour findings and its location.

A sentinel lymph node biopsy can help assess whether melanoma cells have reached the first draining lymph nodes. Surgery is not the only treatment decision: scans, pathology, and the overall stage may guide discussion of immunotherapy or other care.

Bring your medication list and tell the team about blood thinners, allergies, previous reactions to anaesthesia, and conditions that affect wound healing. Ask where the scar will be, how the wound will be closed, and when dressing changes and activity limits apply.

After surgery, follow wound instructions, protect the area from unnecessary sun exposure, and attend pathology and follow-up appointments. Keep a record of new or changing marks so future examinations can compare them.

Contact the surgical team promptly for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, wound separation, fever, or bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure. Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, or a rapidly worsening severe headache.

Ask what the pathology shows, whether the margins are clear, whether lymph-node assessment is appropriate, and which follow-up schedule fits your stage. Ask how scar care, sun protection, and treatment of other skin changes should be handled.
