What should you know about melanoma smaller than 3mm?

A measurement may refer to the visible spot, the tumour depth, or a detail in a pathology report, so ask exactly what was measured. A small visible lesion can still have features that affect staging. Specialists review the pathology wording, whether the edges are clear, ulceration or other microscopic findings, and whether examination suggests involvement beyond the original site.

The diagnosis does not mean that spread has occurred. It means the tissue needs to be interpreted accurately so the care team can decide whether local treatment alone is appropriate or whether further staging is useful.

Request a copy of the pathology report and arrange review with a dermatologist or melanoma team. Treatment commonly involves removing the lesion with an appropriate margin; the proposed procedure depends on its site and pathology. Ask whether Surgical Excision or Skin Cancer Surgery is advised, and whether Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy has a role based on the report rather than the visible diameter alone.

Contact the clinical team promptly if the biopsy site becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, painful, or draining, or if you develop fever.
