Melanoma skin check

A thorough appointment may include areas that are easy to miss, such as the scalp, backs of the legs, soles, nails, and between the fingers and toes. The clinician compares marks with one another and may use a dermatoscope to see structures below the surface. A mark that differs from your usual pattern can deserve closer review.

A skin check is an assessment, not a diagnosis. If a lesion looks concerning, [Surgical Excision](/treatments/surgical-dermatology/excisional-surgery/) or another biopsy can provide tissue for testing. The result determines whether further staging or treatment is discussed.

Before the visit, note new marks and changes in older ones, and bring photographs if you have them. Ask someone you trust to help inspect areas you cannot see. Use shade and protective clothing outdoors, and use sunscreen as directed for your skin. A check should complement, not replace, attention to a mark that is changing between appointments.

Book a prompt assessment for a mark that changes quickly, develops irregular colour or edges, repeatedly bleeds, crusts, or does not heal. Seek urgent advice for heavy bleeding, spreading redness with fever, or feeling markedly unwell. A concerning sign needs assessment because of the sign itself; it does not prove melanoma.

Ask which marks should be photographed, whether a dermatoscope was used, how soon a review is needed, and what changes should trigger an earlier visit. If biopsy is advised, ask how the wound will be cared for and when the result will be explained.
