Melanoma skin cancer removal

The surgeon removes the visible melanoma and a border of nearby skin so the specimen can be assessed at its edges. The amount removed depends on the tumour's features and location. Closure may use stitches, a local flap, or a graft when the wound cannot be closed directly.

Pathology describes whether melanoma is present and details that guide staging and further care. Removal of the primary lesion does not replace follow-up. Some people need discussion of lymph-node assessment or treatment that works throughout the body, depending on the findings.

Before surgery, tell the team about medicines that affect bleeding, allergies, and any difficulty healing.
