What should you know about melanoma roof of mouth?

The roof of the mouth is covered by oral lining, and a patch there may reflect injury, irritation, pigment, medication effects, infection, or a growth. Oral melanoma is uncommon, but a persistent dark patch, uneven colour, new lump, ulcer, or bleeding area should not be diagnosed from appearance alone.

A dental professional, oral surgeon, dermatologist, or doctor may inspect the mouth and neck, feel nearby lymph nodes, and arrange a biopsy when appropriate. The tissue result—not colour alone—establishes whether melanoma is present.

Arrange a prompt appointment if the area remains, enlarges, changes colour, becomes raised, or causes pain or bleeding. Bring a list of medicines and mention tobacco or alcohol exposure, recent dental work, dentures, burns from food, and any earlier oral lesions. Avoid scraping or applying unprescribed chemicals to the patch.

If melanoma is confirmed, treatment may involve surgical excision and staging. Your care team may discuss lymph-node assessment, follow-up after cancer treatment, and systemic therapy such as immunotherapy according to the findings.

Seek urgent assessment for difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, dehydration, or severe pain with fever. Arrange prompt rather than routine review for a mouth sore or dark patch that does not settle, especially when it is changing or associated with a neck lump.

Ask what causes are being considered, whether a biopsy is needed, who will perform it, and when results will be explained. Ask how to manage eating and oral care after assessment, which changes to report, and whether the neck or other areas need examination.
