How the structures involved in Melanoma differ from normal

Short answer

Melanoma on a woman’s leg needs prompt medical assessment when a mark changes in colour, shape, size, or sensation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a changing leg mark can mean

Melanoma is a cancer of pigment-producing skin cells. On the legs, it may appear in an existing mole or as a new dark spot. Warning features include uneven halves, an irregular edge, several shades, enlargement, or a mark that stands out from others. Itching, tenderness, crusting, or bleeding can also occur, although appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A clinician may examine the whole skin surface and nearby lymph nodes. If the mark is concerning, removal or a biopsy allows a laboratory specialist to assess the cells and measure features that guide staging.

What to do next

Arrange a dermatology appointment rather than trying to treat or scrape the mark yourself. Photograph it with a date and note when you first noticed change. Bring details about earlier photographs, sun exposure, previous skin cancers, and family history.

Assessment may lead to Surgical Excision or another form of Skin Cancer Surgery. A Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy may be discussed when the tumour’s measured features make lymph-node assessment useful. Treatment plans can also include Immunotherapy when melanoma has features that make systemic treatment appropriate.

When to seek care

Seek a prompt appointment for a rapidly changing, bleeding, ulcerated, persistently itchy, or painful mark, or for a new dark lesion that looks unlike the others on your leg. Seek urgent medical help if a skin problem is accompanied by severe weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or uncontrolled bleeding. These symptoms do not diagnose melanoma, but they should not be ignored.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the mark needs removal, what the examination found, when pathology will be available, and whether lymph-node assessment is relevant. Ask how to check the rest of your skin, how often follow-up is needed, and which new symptoms should trigger an earlier review.

Questions people ask

Does pain prove that a leg mark is melanoma?

No. Pain can have many causes, and melanoma may be painless; a changing or unusual mark still deserves assessment.

What should I do with a changing mole?

Record its appearance, avoid picking it, and arrange a dermatology appointment for examination.
