What should you know about melanoma on a hand?

Melanoma develops in pigment-producing cells and can occur on the back of the hand, palm, fingers, or around a nail. Warning features include uneven borders, mixed shades, enlargement, a raised area, itching, bleeding, crusting, or a lesion unlike nearby marks. A dark streak or pigment beside a nail should also be examined.

A hand mark may instead be a bruise, wart, inflamed mole, or another benign condition. Examination with dermoscopy can help, but a biopsy is what establishes the diagnosis. The result can describe the tumour and help decide whether more tissue needs removal or whether staging is needed.

Make a dermatology appointment and bring photographs showing how the area has changed. Keep the lesion clean and avoid cutting, scraping, freezing, or applying unprescribed creams. Mention hand dominance, work demands, numbness, and any difficulty moving a finger because these details can help with procedural planning.

Confirmed melanoma is usually managed by removing the lesion with a planned margin. Depending on the findings, the team may discuss Surgical Excision, Skin Cancer Surgery, or Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy. If melanoma has spread, systemic options such as Immunotherapy may be considered.

Seek prompt review when a hand lesion changes over a short period, repeatedly bleeds, becomes an ulcer, develops discharge, or is associated with a new lump in the nearby arm or armpit. Urgent care is appropriate for severe swelling, spreading redness with fever, sudden weakness, confusion, or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the lesion is best biopsied in one piece, how treatment could affect grip or nail growth, and how long healing may take. Ask what the pathology means, whether a wider excision or lymph-node procedure is needed, and what symptoms should trigger contact after treatment.
