What should you know about melanoma on a finger?

Melanoma is a cancer of pigment-producing cells. On a finger it may look like a new or changing mole, an uneven brown or black patch, a firm bump, or a mark that bleeds, crusts, itches, or fails to heal. Pigment can sometimes extend around a nail or into the nail itself, so the nail folds and fingertip deserve attention too.

A visual change does not confirm melanoma; irritation, a bruise, an ordinary mole, or another skin condition can look similar. A clinician may use dermoscopy and remove part or all of the suspicious tissue for laboratory examination. The report helps identify the melanoma type and guides decisions about further surgery or staging.

Arrange a dermatology appointment promptly, especially if the mark is evolving or is different from your other spots. Do not pick, burn, freeze, or apply strong home treatments to it. Take a clear photograph beside a simple size reference and note when you first noticed the change, but do not delay assessment while monitoring it.

If melanoma is confirmed, treatment commonly begins with Surgical Excision or other Skin Cancer Surgery. The clinician may discuss margins, wound closure, and whether a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy is useful for staging. Treatment depends on the examination and pathology, not on the finger location alone.

Seek an urgent clinical assessment if the lesion is rapidly changing, repeatedly bleeding, painful, infected-looking, or surrounded by spreading redness. Seek prompt help for a new dark streak under a nail, pigment extending onto the nearby skin, or a sore that does not heal. New headaches, weakness, confusion, breathing difficulty, or unexplained swelling require urgent medical attention rather than waiting for a routine skin review.

Ask whether the area needs dermoscopy or biopsy, how the procedure will affect finger movement and the nail, and when results should be available. Ask what the pathology shows, whether further excision or staging is needed, how to care for the wound, and how follow-up will check the treated site and nearby skin.
