What should you know about melanoma lung cancer?

Short answer
Melanoma lung cancer means melanoma has been found in lung tissue, so doctors need to determine where it began and how far it has spread before choosing treatment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Diagnosis
- A biopsy and imaging help clarify the origin and spread of melanoma.
- Care
- Treatment is selected according to the melanoma's location, extent, and tumour features.
- Urgency
- Severe breathing trouble, bleeding, collapse, or new neurological symptoms need urgent help.
What it can mean
Melanoma is a cancer that starts in pigment-producing cells. When melanoma is identified in the lung, it may represent melanoma that has travelled from another part of the body, or less commonly a melanoma that began in the lung. A tissue sample is examined to clarify the diagnosis. Imaging may assess the chest and other organs, including the brain, because melanoma can spread beyond its original site. The separate Lung Cancer page explains cancers that begin in lung cells; the two diagnoses are not interchangeable.
Symptoms can include cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, coughing blood, or a change in voice such as a Hoarse Voice. These symptoms can have many causes, so their presence alone does not establish melanoma.
What to do next
Arrange review with the team caring for you and take reports from scans, biopsies, and earlier melanoma treatment. Ask whether genomic tumour profiling could identify features that influence treatment selection. Options may include medicines that travel through the bloodstream, Radiotherapy for selected areas, surgery such as a Lung Lobectomy in carefully chosen situations, or Chemotherapy. Palliative Care can help with breathlessness, pain, fatigue, appetite, and emotional support at any stage, alongside cancer-directed care.
When to seek care quickly
Contact your oncology team promptly for worsening breathlessness, new chest pain, coughing blood, persistent vomiting, confusion, weakness, a seizure, or a severe new headache. Call emergency services for sudden difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, collapse, or a rapidly changing level of alertness. New neurological symptoms need urgent assessment because melanoma can involve the brain.
Questions for your doctor
Ask where the melanoma most likely started, whether the lung finding was confirmed by biopsy, which scans are needed for staging, and whether testing of the tumour may guide medicines. You can also ask what each treatment is intended to achieve, how breathing symptoms will be managed, and whom to contact outside appointments.
Questions people ask
Is melanoma in the lung the same as lung cancer?
Not necessarily. Melanoma in lung tissue may have spread from another site, while lung cancer begins in lung cells; pathology and imaging help distinguish them.
Can melanoma in the lung cause a cough?
It can, although cough also has many non-cancer causes. A persistent or worsening cough should be discussed with a clinician.
