What should you know about melanoma lentigo maligno?

Lentigo maligna describes an early form confined to the top skin layer; lentigo maligna melanoma means melanoma cells have grown into deeper skin. It can look like a flat, uneven brown, black, or mixed-colour patch with an irregular outline. Borders may extend gradually, and colour can vary within the same area. A visual check cannot confirm the diagnosis, because benign sun spots and other pigmented lesions can look similar.

A clinician may examine the area with a dermatoscope and recommend a biopsy. The laboratory report helps show whether invasion is present and whether further removal or staging is needed.

Arrange assessment for a patch that changes in size, shape, colour, or texture, especially on the face, scalp, ears, or neck. Do not try to remove or bleach it at home. Photographing the area beside a ruler can help you describe change, but it does not replace examination. If melanoma is confirmed, the usual discussion centres on complete removal with an appropriate margin; the team may also consider Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy or other staging tests depending on the depth and findings.
