What should you know about melanoma late stage?

Doctors use staging to describe how far melanoma has travelled. Spread may involve nearby lymph nodes, distant skin or soft tissue, organs, or the brain. The stage is based on examination, imaging, laboratory information, and sometimes tissue sampling. A diagnosis of advanced disease is serious, but it does not describe one identical situation for every person; the sites involved, symptoms, previous treatment, and general health all shape the plan.

A specialist team may discuss surgery for a removable area, medicines that activate the immune system, or a combination of approaches. Brain involvement can cause headaches, weakness, seizures, confusion, or changes in vision and needs prompt assessment.

Ask for a written explanation of the stage, which areas are involved, and the purpose of each proposed treatment. Bring a current medicine list and note new symptoms, their timing, and what makes them better or worse. Treatment may include Immunotherapy, surgery to remove a selected tumour, or treatment directed at a particular symptom. Keep appointments for scans and blood tests, because results help the team judge how the plan is working and whether it needs adjustment.

Contact your oncology team promptly for a new or worsening headache, seizure, fainting, confusion, weakness on one side, trouble speaking, severe breathlessness, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, or rapidly worsening pain. These symptoms can have several causes, but they require timely assessment. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, or a seizure that does not stop.
