A biopsy helps establish the melanoma type and features. The team then considers tumour depth, ulceration, nearby lymph nodes, and whether scans show disease elsewhere. A melanoma confined to its original area may be removed with surgery and then monitored. If it has reached lymph nodes or distant sites, treatment can be more complex and may include immunotherapy, surgery, or other specialist options. Doctors may use terms such as remission, no evidence of disease, or control because the future cannot be judged from the word curable alone.

Ask for the biopsy report and a clear explanation of the stage. Keep appointments for wound review, staging, and treatment planning. Surgical excision is commonly used for a local melanoma; selected patients may need sentinel lymph node biopsy to assess nearby drainage. Do not miss follow-up even when the treated area looks healed. Check your skin as advised, protect it from ultraviolet exposure, and report a new or changing lesion promptly. The care plan should reflect your tumour findings, general health, and preferences.

Contact the care team promptly for a new lump, unexplained persistent pain, ongoing cough, unusual headaches, weakness, or changes at the treatment site. Seek urgent help for sudden neurological changes, severe breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly worsening illness. These symptoms do not establish recurrence, but they should not wait for a routine review.

Ask what stage the melanoma is, whether surgery removed all visible disease, whether lymph-node testing is useful, what treatment is recommended next, and how response will be checked. Ask how often follow-up occurs and which changes should trigger an earlier call.
