What should you know about melanoma inside the body?

Melanoma begins in pigment-producing cells and can move through nearby tissue, lymphatic channels, or the bloodstream. The phrase inside the body may refer to lymph-node involvement or deposits in an organ; it does not describe one single stage or symptom pattern. Some people have no clear symptoms, while others develop persistent headaches, breathlessness, abdominal discomfort, bone pain, weakness, or unexplained weight change. These symptoms have many possible causes. Doctors combine examination, the original biopsy, imaging, and sometimes tissue sampling to decide whether a finding is related to melanoma.

Contact the oncology or dermatology team that knows your history if a new symptom persists or a scan has raised a concern. Bring previous reports and a current medicine list. The team may review the primary tumour, examine lymph-node areas, and request imaging suited to the symptom or suspected site. A sentinel lymph node biopsy can provide information in selected cases, while surgery may remove a local tumour or provide tissue for diagnosis. Systemic treatments such as immunotherapy may be considered when melanoma is not limited to its starting area.

Get urgent help for sudden weakness, difficulty speaking, a seizure, severe new headache, fainting, chest pain, or serious breathing difficulty. These signs require rapid assessment and do not prove that melanoma has spread. For less urgent changes, report the timing, pattern, and effect on daily activities so the team can choose appropriate tests.

Ask which finding is being investigated, what tests are planned, whether a biopsy is needed, how results will change treatment, and who will explain the staging. Ask about symptom control, treatment goals, and the schedule for follow-up.
