What should you know about melanoma on the inner thigh?

The inner thigh can develop ordinary moles, freckles, friction-related irritation, fungal rashes, or other harmless growths. A spot that changes in size, shape, colour, or surface deserves attention, especially if it becomes itchy, tender, crusted, or bleeds. A clinician compares it with surrounding skin and may examine the groin lymph nodes. The diagnosis comes from a biopsy or removal examined by a pathologist, not from a photograph alone.

Book a skin examination and describe when the mark changed. Take a clear photograph for your own comparison, keep the area clean, and avoid shaving over or picking the spot. If melanoma is diagnosed, treatment often starts with surgical removal; further surgery, sentinel lymph-node biopsy, scans, or immunotherapy may be discussed according to the pathology and stage. Protect the area from repeated friction while waiting for review.

Arrange prompt assessment for a growing or irregular mark, unexplained bleeding, an ulcer, persistent itch, or a new lump in the groin. Seek urgent help if bleeding is difficult to control, the area becomes rapidly swollen and painful, or you develop fever after a procedure. These signs can have causes other than melanoma, but they should not be ignored.

Ask whether the whole lesion should be removed, what the pathology report will explain, and whether the groin nodes need checking. Clarify wound care during walking or exercise, the timing of any further treatment, and how often your skin should be reviewed.
