What should you know about melanoma fund?

The fundus is the inside back surface of the eye, including the retina and nearby structures. A pigmented or raised area there may be a benign mole, another eye condition, or melanoma. Eye specialists examine it with magnified instruments and may use photographs, ultrasound, or other imaging to understand its size and position.

Blurred or reduced vision, flashes, new floaters, a shadow, or loss of part of the visual field can occur, although some lesions are found during a routine eye examination. Symptoms cannot establish the diagnosis. The specialist combines the examination with imaging and the pattern over time.

Arrange assessment with an ophthalmologist experienced in eye tumours when a fundus lesion has been noticed. Bring previous eye photographs or scan reports if available, and mention changes in vision, eye pain, or prior cancer history. Do not delay review while waiting for symptoms to become clearer.

Treatment depends on the lesion, its location, vision, and evidence of spread. Options may include focused eye treatment, surgery, or wider cancer care. Follow-up is used to monitor the eye and overall health; immunotherapy is considered only in selected circumstances.

Seek urgent eye care for sudden vision loss, a curtain-like shadow, a sudden shower of floaters, new flashes with reduced vision, or severe eye pain. Contact the specialist promptly for gradually worsening sight, a persistent field defect, or a newly noticed dark area. These warning signs can have causes other than melanoma, but some are time-sensitive.
