The phrase may be used after a skin examination, biopsy, surgery, or a period of cancer follow-up. Its precise meaning depends on what was checked. For example, a clinician may be describing a clear examination, no detectable disease after treatment, or the result of a particular scan or test. It does not describe every future risk, and it does not replace a pathology report or a personalised treatment plan.

Melanoma is a skin cancer that can begin in pigment-producing cells. A diagnosis and its stage are determined from clinical findings, pathology, and sometimes additional tests. If melanoma has been treated, the care team may continue checking the scar, nearby skin, lymph nodes, and other findings relevant to the original diagnosis.

Keep the written result and ask which examination or test the wording refers to. Attend the follow-up visits recommended for your history, and tell the clinician about a changing mole, a new dark mark, a firm lump, bleeding, crusting, or a sore that does not heal. Check your skin in good light, including less visible areas, and use sun protection that suits your routine. Seek urgent medical help for severe symptoms such as sudden weakness, confusion, trouble speaking, or a severe new headache; these symptoms need assessment regardless of a previous melanoma-free result.
