Melanoma eye tumor: what the diagnosis can mean

The phrase eye tumour can refer to a tumour within the eye, such as ocular melanoma, or a melanoma arising from the eyelid or skin beside the eye. Those locations have different anatomy and treatment considerations. Specialists assess the visible mark or eye structures, measure the lesion, and use imaging to understand its depth and boundaries. They also look for involvement beyond the original site. A dark spot, lump or vision change can have non-cancer causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm melanoma.

The diagnosis and stage guide whether the aim is local control, preservation of useful vision, removal of nearby skin, or treatment of disease elsewhere. Your team can explain each finding in relation to your own scans and examination.

Arrange review with an ophthalmologist experienced in eye tumours or with a dermatologist and oncology team when the lesion is in nearby skin. Bring previous photographs, eye records, scan reports and medication details. Ask whether the tumour needs observation, imaging, biopsy or removal, and how testing may affect treatment choices. Do not delay a recommended appointment because the lesion is not painful; some tumours produce little warning early on.

Seek urgent assessment for sudden loss of sight, severe eye pain, a new curtain-like shadow, rapidly increasing swelling or vision change with weakness, confusion or a severe headache. Contact the clinical team promptly if a known tumour-related mark changes quickly, bleeds or becomes ulcerated. These symptoms need attention even when their cause is not yet known.
