Melanoma behaves differently according to how deeply it has grown, whether it has reached nearby lymph nodes, and whether it has spread to another organ. A small melanoma removed before spread may need surgery alone, while a higher-risk diagnosis can require additional treatment or closer monitoring. News reports and personal stories often use the word cure broadly, but they cannot determine what a particular scan or pathology result means.

Doctors usually combine the skin examination with pathology, lymph-node assessment and imaging when appropriate. The purpose is to establish the extent of disease and select care that fits the person, rather than apply one treatment to all melanomas.

Ask for the pathology report to be explained in plain language, including tumour depth, ulceration, margins and whether lymph nodes were assessed. Excisional surgery may remove a suspicious lesion, and a sentinel lymph node biopsy can provide staging information in selected cases. Depending on the findings, treatment may include further surgery, immunotherapy or active surveillance.

Keep every appointment even when the treated area looks healed. Follow-up checks can find a new skin lesion or a change that needs review, and they give you a place to discuss treatment effects and sun protection.

Contact your care team promptly for a changing mole, a new firm lump near a treated area, persistent swollen glands, unexplained bleeding, or a wound that is not healing. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, weakness on one side, or sudden severe pain.

Ask what stage applies, whether the lesion was fully removed, whether lymph-node testing is useful, what additional treatment is being considered, and how follow-up will be organised.
