What should you know about melanoma choroid?

The choroid is a blood-vessel-rich layer between the white outer wall of the eye and the light-sensing retina. A tumour there may be found during an eye examination or after symptoms such as blurred vision, flashes, a shadow in the field of view, or a change in the shape of the pupil. These symptoms can also have other causes, so an eye symptom does not by itself establish melanoma.

An ophthalmologist may use a dilated examination, eye ultrasound and photographs to describe the lesion. Imaging helps assess its position and size, while other tests may be used when spread outside the eye is a concern. The diagnosis and stage guide the treatment discussion.

Arrange prompt review with an ophthalmologist experienced in eye tumours if a clinician has raised this possibility. Bring previous eye records and a list of medicines. Treatment can involve focused radiation, removal of the tumour, or removal of the eye in selected situations; the choice depends on vision, tumour features and overall health. Ask how the plan protects useful vision and how the other eye will be monitored.

After treatment, scheduled eye examinations check the treated area and visual function. Your team may also discuss body imaging and longer-term surveillance because melanoma can travel beyond its original site.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden loss of vision, a curtain-like shadow, severe eye pain, marked redness, new neurological symptoms, or a rapidly worsening visual change. If symptoms are gradual but persistent, book an eye appointment soon rather than waiting for them to settle.

Ask where the lesion is located, how it was measured, whether a biopsy is needed, what treatments could preserve vision, and which follow-up examinations or scans are recommended.
