Can melanoma be cured?

When melanoma is removed and there is no evidence of disease afterwards, doctors may describe the aim as curative. This is different from promising that melanoma will never return. The outlook is shaped by tumour thickness and features, lymph-node findings, whether melanoma has reached other organs, and how it responds to treatment.

A skin melanoma may be treated with surgical excision. Additional tests or treatment can be considered when the tumour has higher-risk features or has spread. The word cure should be discussed in the context of your own pathology report and scans.

Attend appointments for pathology review, staging, treatment decisions, and surveillance. Check your skin and nails regularly in the way your clinician recommends, and report a changing lesion or new lump. Protect exposed skin from intense ultraviolet light with shade, clothing, and suitable sunscreen. If treatment is offered, ask what it is intended to achieve and how its effect will be assessed.

Contact your clinician promptly about a new or changing pigmented mark, a firm lump near a previous melanoma site, unexplained bleeding from a lesion, or new persistent symptoms. Seek emergency care for a seizure, sudden weakness, severe confusion, or difficulty speaking. These signs need assessment even when you are already under follow-up.

Ask what stage and pathology features apply, whether the treatment goal is curative, and what could alter that assessment. Clarify the follow-up schedule, symptoms to report, and whether family members need advice about skin checks.
