What should you know about melanoma brain lesions?

A brain lesion is an area that looks abnormal on brain imaging. In a person with melanoma, it may represent spread to the brain, but infection, bleeding, inflammation or another tumour can produce a similar scan finding. Only the clinical history, examination and appropriate imaging can clarify its meaning.

Possible effects include headache, nausea, seizures, weakness, numbness, balance difficulty, speech changes, personality change or visual problems. Some lesions cause no symptoms and are found during staging or follow-up. The care team considers the number, position and size of lesions alongside the melanoma history.

Contact the oncology team promptly if a scan mentions a brain lesion or if new neurological symptoms appear. Assessment may include contrast imaging, neurological examination and review of earlier scans. Your clinicians may involve oncology, neurosurgery, radiation specialists and supportive-care professionals.

Treatment can include medicines to control swelling or seizures, focused radiation, surgery or systemic treatment such as immunotherapy. The choice depends on symptoms, lesion features, overall health and the status of melanoma elsewhere. Do not stop prescribed medicines without speaking to the treating team.

Call emergency services for a first seizure, a seizure lasting longer than expected, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, new trouble speaking, severe worsening headache, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion or a sudden change in alertness. These symptoms can signal pressure or bleeding in the brain.

Ask what the scan shows, whether it is definite or needs more imaging, which symptoms require emergency help, and whether driving or work restrictions apply. Discuss treatment goals, side effects, seizure precautions and how follow-up scans will be arranged.
