What should you know about melanoma and Bob Marley?

The melanoma associated with Bob Marley was acral lentiginous melanoma, a form that can arise on the soles, palms or under a nail. It may look like a dark streak, patch or area of pigment and can be overlooked because these sites are not always checked.

His story does not mean that every dark nail mark is melanoma. Bruising, repeated pressure, infection and other pigment changes can look similar. A clinician considers whether pigment is changing, widening or extending onto nearby skin and may remove tissue for diagnosis.

Arrange a dermatology appointment for a new or changing nail streak, a dark patch on the sole or palm, or pigment that persists without a clear injury. Photograph the area to track change and avoid scraping, drilling or applying unprescribed treatments to the nail.

If a biopsy confirms melanoma, the care plan may include surgical removal and tests to determine whether nearby lymph nodes or other organs need assessment. Treatment choices depend on the pathology and the location, not on a celebrity story.

Seek prompt care for rapid change, bleeding, ulceration, a painful enlarging lesion or a new lump in the nearby groin or armpit. Go to emergency care for uncontrolled bleeding, severe infection signs or new neurological symptoms such as weakness or confusion.

Ask whether the pigment could be trauma, whether a nail or skin biopsy is needed, what recovery involves, and whether the lesion has features of acral melanoma. If diagnosed, ask about margins, staging, treatment choices and follow-up.
