What should you know about melanoma blood cancer?

Blood cancer is a broad term that includes cancers affecting blood-forming tissues, blood cells, or the immune system. Leukaemia is one type; it begins in blood-forming tissue and leads to abnormal blood cells. Melanoma begins in pigment-producing cells, so it is not a form of leukaemia.

A person with melanoma can develop another cancer, and melanoma can affect other organs, but symptoms and blood-test changes do not identify the cause by themselves. Easy bruising can occur for many reasons, including platelet or clotting problems, medicines, injury, or other medical conditions. A clinician needs to interpret it with an examination and blood results.

Arrange medical review for unexplained bruising, repeated infections, persistent fever, unusual tiredness, pale skin, bleeding, or a blood count that is outside the expected range. Assessment may include a full blood count, examination of lymph nodes and the abdomen, and other blood tests. A bone marrow biopsy may be recommended when the team needs to examine blood-forming tissue directly.

Treatment depends on the specific diagnosis and its features. Options can include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, supportive blood transfusion, or stem cell transplant in selected situations. Previous melanoma treatment should be included in the history so the team can interpret symptoms, medicines, and test results accurately.

Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop, black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, severe weakness, chest pain, breathlessness, confusion, or a high fever during cancer treatment. Contact a clinician promptly for rapidly spreading bruises, repeated nosebleeds, or marked tiredness. Do not wait for a routine visit if symptoms are severe or worsening.
