What should you know about melanoma around eye?

A melanoma near the eye can start in the eyelid or surrounding skin, where it may resemble a mole, freckle, scaly patch, or sore. A separate form can arise from pigment cells inside the eye and may not be visible in a mirror. Warning changes include growth, uneven colour, an irregular edge, bleeding, crusting, lash loss, or a persistent sore. Blurred vision, flashes, floaters, a shadow, or a change in the shape of the pupil requires eye assessment; these symptoms have several possible causes and do not establish melanoma.

Do not pick, burn, or attempt to remove a lesion close to the eye. Record visible change with a photograph only if it does not delay care, and mention contact-lens use, previous eye disease, and any visual symptoms. A dermatologist, ophthalmologist, or specialist team may examine the eyelid and eye, use imaging, and recommend a biopsy or surgical procedure when appropriate. Treatment is planned around the lesion's location and extent while protecting vision and eyelid function.

Arrange prompt review for a changing eyelid mark, unexplained lash loss, a sore that does not heal, or repeated bleeding near the eye. Seek urgent eye care for sudden vision loss, a new shadow or curtain, severe eye pain, marked swelling, or rapidly increasing redness. Do not wait for a skin appointment if vision is changing.
