What should you know about a MEK inhibitor for melanoma?

Melanoma cells can depend on signalling through the MAPK pathway. A MEK inhibitor interrupts part of that signal, but it is useful only when the clinical and molecular picture supports it. Your team may discuss it after reviewing tumour testing, stage, previous treatment, general health, and the pattern of disease. Surgery can remain relevant for a skin lesion or a selected area of spread, while other people may be offered another systemic treatment. A MEK inhibitor is not a general treatment for every melanoma.

Use the medicine on the schedule given by your oncology team and check before adding a prescription, over-the-counter product, or supplement. Tell the team about eye symptoms, heart disease, liver problems, pregnancy possibility, and planned surgery. Attend blood tests and other reviews, which may include heart and eye checks. Keep notes about rash, diarrhoea, fever, swelling, breathlessness, tiredness, and changes in vision. Protect sensitive skin from sunlight and use the products recommended for your skin. Never double a missed dose unless specifically instructed.

Contact your treatment team promptly for a persistent rash, severe diarrhoea, mouth sores, unusual bleeding, yellow skin, or a sudden decline in energy. Seek urgent help for chest pain, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, sudden visual change or loss, confusion, or facial swelling with breathing trouble. These symptoms can have several causes, but they need timely assessment while taking a targeted cancer medicine.

Ask what tumour test supports the choice, whether another targeted drug will be combined with the MEK inhibitor, how response will be checked, which side effects require an immediate call, and what to do if a dose is missed.
