What should you know about medtronic percutaneous pedicle screws?

A pedicle screw is anchored through the pedicle, the part of a vertebra that connects its back structures to the main body of bone. Percutaneous placement uses guidewires, imaging, and small incisions to position the screws. Rods can then connect the screws and help hold the spine in the alignment chosen by the surgeon.

This approach may be included in spinal fusion or selected scoliosis surgery, depending on the spinal problem. It is not suitable for every anatomy or operation. The brand and insertion method do not predict your recovery by themselves; the number of levels, bone quality, nerve involvement, fusion plan, and general health also influence care.

Give your team a complete medicine list and mention nicotine use, diabetes, bleeding problems, allergies, previous operations, or active infection. Ask whether you will need a brace, how long sitting or driving may be restricted, and which movements could stress the healing construct.

After surgery, inspect the small incisions as instructed and use medicines according to the discharge plan. Gentle walking is often built into recovery, while lifting, bending, and twisting should follow the surgeon or physiotherapist’s limits. Rehabilitation is adjusted as strength, comfort, and healing progress.

Call the surgical team if an incision becomes increasingly red, hot, painful, or wet, or if you develop fever or a new increase in back pain. Treat new weakness, worsening numbness, inability to control urine or stool, severe balance difficulty, chest pain, or shortness of breath as urgent symptoms.

Ask which spinal levels will be fixed, why a percutaneous route is proposed, and whether a fusion is part of the operation. Discuss expected pain changes, activity milestones, imaging follow-up, restrictions, and signs that require immediate contact.
