What should you know about a Medtronic ECG machine?

An ECG tracing may help a clinician look for an irregular rhythm, changes in the pattern of electrical conduction, or signs that the heart is under strain. The machine produces a tracing; it does not by itself provide a complete diagnosis. Symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and sometimes other tests are considered alongside it.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, wrists, and ankles, and tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices, or skin sensitivity. You may be asked to rest quietly while adhesive electrodes are placed. Keep still and breathe normally during the short recording; movement, shivering, or a loose electrode can affect the tracing. The test does not send electricity into your body.

Seek urgent medical help for chest pressure or pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or sudden weakness, especially when symptoms are new or worsening. Do not delay emergency care while arranging an ECG or waiting for a machine reading. A normal or inconclusive tracing also cannot explain every cause of chest symptoms.

Ask what the tracing showed, whether it explains your symptoms, and whether repeat monitoring or another test is needed. You can also ask how medicines or an implanted cardiac device might affect interpretation.
