Medicine to clear a blocked nose: what to know

A blocked nose happens when the nasal lining swells, mucus thickens, or both occur together. A common cold often settles with time, while allergic rhinitis can cause sneezing, itching, and watery discharge. Sinusitis may bring facial pressure or thick mucus. Repeated congestion can also relate to house dust mite allergy, chronic sinusitis, or obstructive sleep apnoea. Decongestant sprays can open the nose quickly, but prolonged use may make congestion return or worsen.

Saline spray or rinsing can moisturise the nose and clear mucus. A pharmacist can advise whether a decongestant spray, tablet, or allergy medicine fits your symptoms. Use sprays exactly as directed and do not continue them beyond the stated short course. Check first if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, glaucoma, thyroid disease, are pregnant, or take regular medicines. Keep rinsing equipment clean and use water prepared according to the product instructions.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, or a severe headache with neck stiffness. Arrange medical review for one-sided blockage that persists, recurrent nosebleeds, swelling around an eye, severe facial pain, or symptoms that keep returning despite appropriate treatment. A blocked nose with loud snoring, pauses in breathing, or marked daytime sleepiness also deserves assessment.
