What should you know about medicine that helps acid reflux?

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move back towards the food pipe. Antacids can neutralise acid quickly, while alginates can create a barrier that helps limit upward movement. Acid-reducing medicines lower acid production and are often used when symptoms are frequent or disturb sleep. A hiatus hernia, some medicines, and body-weight-related pressure can contribute to reflux; treating one factor may not remove every symptom.

Reflux can present with burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid, cough, chest tightness, abdominal pain, or difficulty sleeping. Use the product exactly as directed. Some acid-reducing medicines work best when taken before food, but the correct timing depends on the medicine. Check with a pharmacist before combining products or if you take regular prescriptions, are pregnant, or have kidney or liver disease. Avoid lying down soon after eating, consider a smaller evening meal, and raise the head end of the bed if night symptoms persist. Get urgent help for chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw; vomiting blood; black stools; or severe difficulty swallowing. Arrange medical review for food sticking, persistent vomiting, unexplained weight loss, ongoing abdominal pain, or reflux that continues despite correct treatment. These warning features should be assessed rather than managed by adding more medicine.
