Medicine for vomiting and diarrhea

Vomiting and loose stools often occur when the digestive tract is irritated by an infection or contaminated food. Gastroenteritis and food poisoning are possible causes; rotavirus infection is another consideration, especially in children. The immediate concern is fluid and salt loss, not simply stopping every symptom.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. When nausea settles, try light foods and return gradually to normal meals. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an anti-sickness medicine is suitable. Do not give anti-diarrhea medicine to a child without professional advice, and avoid antibiotics unless prescribed for a diagnosed reason. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while unwell.

Seek urgent help for severe or constant abdominal pain, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, bloody stools, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck, or trouble breathing. Arrange medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, have a dry mouth with marked weakness, or symptoms continue. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a long-term illness can become dehydrated quickly.
