The short answer
Medicine for travel vomiting depends on its cause, and rehydration is the first priority when you can keep fluids down. Motion sickness medicines may help predictable travel-related nausea, but they can cause drowsiness and are not suitable for everyone. Vomiting from infection or another illness needs a different approach.
Why vomiting happens
Movement, unfamiliar food or water, and infections can trigger vomiting during a trip. Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, and Rotavirus Infection may also cause diarrhoea, cramps, or fever. Migraine can bring nausea with headache, while Gallstones or Pancreatitis may cause significant abdominal pain. These causes should not be assumed to be travel sickness.
What you can do
After vomiting, take small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration fluid. Increase the amount gradually if it stays down, then choose bland foods when ready. For motion sickness, sit where movement is least noticeable, look ahead, keep air flowing, and avoid heavy meals before travel. Ask a pharmacist about timing and interactions before taking an anti-sickness product.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical help for blood or green vomit, severe or persistent abdominal pain, stiff neck with headache, confusion, fainting, breathing trouble, or inability to keep fluids down. Get advice if urination becomes much less frequent, the mouth is very dry, or vomiting continues during travel, especially for a child, older adult, or pregnant traveller.
Questions for your doctor
Is this likely motion sickness or an illness? Which medicine is safe with my regular treatment? Could I become drowsy while driving? What rehydration plan should I use, and which symptoms need urgent care abroad?
