Medicine for a blocked nose due to a cold

A cold inflames the lining inside the nose, causing swelling and thicker mucus. Congestion may occur alongside a sore throat, cough, or mild fever. Allergy-related symptoms tend to follow exposure and may include sneezing or itchy, watery eyes; sinusitis can bring facial pressure or discoloured discharge.

A blocked nose does not by itself identify the cause. Allergic rhinitis, house dust mite allergy, and chronic sinusitis can produce similar obstruction. Night-time blockage with loud snoring or pauses in breathing should be discussed with a clinician because obstructive sleep apnoea needs a different approach.

Use a saline spray or rinse with water prepared according to the product instructions, drink fluids, and rest. A pharmacist can advise whether a decongestant spray or oral product is suitable. Nasal decongestant sprays should only be used for the label’s short course, because prolonged use can make blockage rebound.

Check combination cold remedies carefully so you do not take duplicate pain-relief or decongestant ingredients. Ask before using decongestants if you have high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, are pregnant, or take regular medicines. Allergy medication is more relevant when symptoms follow a recurring trigger than when they are caused by a cold.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or face, confusion, or a rapidly worsening illness. Arrange medical advice for severe facial pain, swelling around an eye, a persistent high fever, or symptoms that improve and then become markedly worse.

See a clinician when congestion lasts beyond the expected cold, repeatedly affects one side, causes frequent nosebleeds, or disrupts sleep despite appropriate measures. Children with breathing or feeding difficulty need prompt assessment.
