Medicine for itching during pregnancy

Itching can come from stretched or dry skin, eczema, contact with an irritant, hives or an infection. It can also occur with pregnancy-specific conditions that need medical assessment, especially when itching is intense, widespread or present without an obvious rash. The hands and feet deserve particular attention because their involvement can change the urgency of evaluation.

A clinician may ask when the itching began, whether a rash is present, what products or medicines you use and whether you have other symptoms. Do not assume a non-prescription product is suitable simply because it is sold for sensitive skin.

Use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, keep showers lukewarm and choose loose cotton clothing. A cool compress can briefly settle an itchy area. Avoid scratching, new fragranced products and herbal mixtures unless your maternity or dermatology team has reviewed them.

Ask a pharmacist, obstetric clinician or dermatologist before using an antihistamine, medicated lotion, steroid cream or other tablet. They can match the treatment to the suspected cause and advise where, how often and for how long to apply it. Tell them about every medicine and supplement you take.

Contact your maternity team promptly for severe or persistent itching, itching that is worse at night, or itching on the palms or soles. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, a rapidly spreading blistering rash, fever or feeling very unwell.

Arrange an assessment if the skin becomes painful, warm, crusted or draining, or if sleep is repeatedly disturbed. These changes can point to infection or a condition needing prescription treatment rather than symptom relief alone.

Ask: What is the likely cause of my itching? Which moisturiser or medicine is suitable at my stage of pregnancy? Where should I apply it, and what should make me stop? Do I need tests or follow-up if the itching continues?
