Medicine for dehydration in adults

Short answer
For adult dehydration, replace fluid gradually with water or oral rehydration solution and treat the cause rather than relying on a single medicine.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Best starting point
- Small, frequent sips are often easier to keep down.
- Salt replacement
- Oral rehydration solution may help after fluid and salt loss.
- Emergency signs
- Confusion, fainting or inability to drink needs urgent care.
What dehydration means
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in. Vomiting, diarrhoea, sweating, fever, heat exposure and difficulty drinking can all contribute. Dark urine, a dry mouth, headache, tiredness, dizziness and constipation can occur, although other conditions can cause the same symptoms.
The right treatment depends on severity and the reason for fluid loss. Gastroenteritis may need attention to vomiting or diarrhoea, while Heat Exhaustion requires cooling and medical assessment if symptoms do not settle. Kidney or urinary symptoms can point to another problem rather than simple fluid shortage.
How to rehydrate
Take frequent small sips of water. An oral rehydration solution can replace fluid and salts lost through vomiting or diarrhoea; prepare it exactly as directed. Once drinking is easier, return to normal meals as tolerated. Avoid using leftover antibiotics, and do not treat dehydration by taking water tablets unless a clinician has prescribed them for your situation.
A pharmacist or doctor should guide fluid replacement if you have heart failure, kidney disease, diabetes, are pregnant, or take medicines that affect fluid balance. Monitor whether urine becomes lighter and whether alertness, thirst and dizziness improve.
When to seek care
Get urgent help if you are confused, unusually drowsy, faint, unable to keep fluids down, passing very little urine, breathing rapidly, or have severe weakness. Heat exposure with worsening symptoms needs prompt assessment. Seek care for blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or signs of a urinary infection or Kidney Stones.
Questions for your doctor
What is likely causing my fluid loss? Is an oral rehydration solution suitable with my medical conditions and medicines? How should I respond if I develop Dark Urine, Cloudy Urine or worsening dizziness?
