After a burn, a flat dark or light area may differ from a scar that is thick, firm, depressed, or attached to deeper tissue. A scar can restrict movement when it crosses a joint. Freshly injured or open skin needs burn care rather than cosmetic treatment. The right plan depends on the burn depth, location, healing stage, symptoms, and how the area affects function.

Do not apply harsh lightening products, acids, or unprescribed steroid creams to recently injured skin.
