Medications that cause low blood pressure

Blood-pressure tablets, water tablets, some heart medicines, medicines for anxiety or sleep, strong pain medicines, and treatments that widen blood vessels may cause low readings or symptoms. The effect can be stronger after illness, sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, alcohol, or a sudden change in dose.

Some people have no symptoms, while others feel light-headed when standing, weak, blurred in vision, nauseated, or unsteady. Dizziness can have causes unrelated to blood pressure, so a reading and a careful history are more useful than guessing from one symptom.

Sit or lie down when symptoms begin, rise slowly, and hold a support when standing. Record the time, activity, symptoms, blood-pressure reading if available, and every medicine taken that day. Do not drive while faint or unsteady.

Do not reduce, double, or stop a prescribed dose on your own. Ask a clinician or pharmacist to review the full list, including over-the-counter products. A GP consultation can check standing and seated readings, hydration, pulse, and whether another treatment or schedule is appropriate.

Call emergency services for fainting with chest pain, severe breathlessness, a new irregular heartbeat, confusion, seizure, one-sided weakness, or injury. Seek urgent help for ongoing collapse, cold clammy skin, or inability to stay awake.

Arrange prompt medical advice after repeated near-fainting, falls, or symptoms that began after a dose change. Take the medicine list and recorded readings to the appointment.
