Medications that cause dark urine

Dark yellow urine often reflects concentrated urine, especially after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or not drinking enough. Some medicines and supplements can also add orange, red, brown, or blue-green tones. Colour alone cannot identify the cause.

Brown or tea-coloured urine may occur when bile pigments enter urine or when muscle breakdown releases pigment. A medicine may be involved, but dark urine can also accompany dehydration, heat exhaustion, or liver inflammation such as hepatitis. Notice whether the urine becomes lighter after sensible fluid intake and whether you have pain, fever, yellow skin, pale stools, or reduced urine.

Write down the medicine name, dose, start date, and when the colour changed. Include non-prescription products, vitamins, herbal remedies, and recent antibiotics. Do not stop a prescribed medicine suddenly unless a clinician tells you to; contact a pharmacist or prescriber for a safe review.

Drink fluids normally unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Check the label for colour changes and keep a photo if the change comes and goes. A clinician may review your urine, blood tests, hydration, liver function, or kidney function depending on your symptoms.

Seek urgent medical help if dark urine comes with yellow eyes or skin, severe abdominal or back pain, confusion, fainting, marked weakness, fever, blood or clots in urine, or very little urine. These features can signal a problem that needs prompt assessment.

Arrange a medical review if the colour persists, returns after each dose, or is accompanied by burning, swelling, nausea, or unusual tiredness. If you suspect a severe medicine reaction, use emergency services.
