Medication for orthostatic hypertension

Blood pressure can change when posture changes. A clinician may measure it after resting and again after standing, while reviewing symptoms, medicines, hydration and conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease, Obesity or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. The term is different from ordinary hypertension, so a single home reading should not determine treatment.

Keep a record of readings with the time, posture, symptoms and medicines taken. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and do not alter doses because of one result. Limit excess salt and alcohol only as advised, stay active within your ability, and bring every medicine and supplement to the appointment. Your clinician may check kidney function and cardiovascular risk before choosing an approach.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, fainting or sudden confusion. These can signal Angina, Heart Failure or Stroke. Seek prompt advice for repeated very high readings with headache, vision change or neurological symptoms, even if you feel otherwise well.

Ask how posture should be measured, whether another medicine is contributing, what target is appropriate for you, and when readings or symptoms require review.
