Medication for nausea and vomiting: what to know about over-the-counter options

Some products settle nausea, while others replace fluid and salts lost through vomiting. They do not treat every cause. Vomiting can occur with Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, Migraine or Gallstones, and the right treatment depends on the wider symptoms. Read the label, check age restrictions and avoid combining products with the same active ingredient.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. When fluids stay down, try plain foods and avoid alcohol, rich meals and strong smells. A pharmacist can check interactions, pregnancy considerations and whether an anti-sickness product is appropriate. Do not give an adult medicine to a child without advice, and do not drive if a medicine makes you drowsy.

Get urgent help for blood or green vomit, severe or worsening abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, chest pain or trouble breathing. Arrange prompt medical assessment if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, or symptoms keep returning. Meningitis and Pancreatitis need urgent evaluation when their warning symptoms are present.
