What is the medical term for a stye?

A stye usually appears as a sore, swollen spot at the eyelid edge. The area may be red, gritty, or watery, and a small amount of Eye Discharge can occur. A stye on the outside of the lid differs from an inflamed gland deeper within the lid, and not every eyelid lump is a stye.

Most styes settle without a procedure. They are not made better by squeezing, piercing, or sharing cosmetics. Keep hands clean before touching the eyelid.

Place a clean warm compress over the closed eye for several minutes, repeating it through the day if comfortable. Let the eyelid drain naturally, keep the lid clean, and pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the irritation has cleared.

Pain relief may be suitable for some people, but check the label and your own health conditions. A GP Consultation is useful if the lump persists, returns often, or interferes with vision.

Arrange prompt assessment for worsening swelling, spreading redness, fever, severe pain, reduced vision, pain when moving the eye, or swelling that extends around the eye. Seek advice if the eyelid is not improving or the lump keeps recurring.
