What is the medical name for a stye?

A hordeolum usually starts when an eyelid gland or eyelash follicle becomes blocked and inflamed. It may form on the outside of the lid or deeper within it. The area can look red, swollen, and sore, with a small yellow point. Mild watering or crusting can occur, but vision should remain clear.

A stye is not the same as a chalazion. A chalazion is typically a firmer, less tender blocked gland. An examination can distinguish these when a lump does not settle.

Place a clean, comfortably warm cloth over the closed eye for several minutes, repeating this during the day. Wash hands before and after touching the eyelid, and do not squeeze or pierce the lump. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until the eye feels better. Do not use someone else's eye drops or apply antibiotic treatment unless a clinician has advised it.

Arrange prompt assessment if swelling spreads around the eye, the eyelid becomes very painful, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Seek urgent care for changes in vision, pain when moving the eye, marked sensitivity to light, or an eye that appears pushed forward. These features can indicate a problem beyond a simple eyelid lump.
