Medical leave without a medical certificate

An employer may accept a personal absence notification, self-declaration, or another internal form for some situations. That administrative option does not confirm a diagnosis or replace care when symptoms need assessment. Requirements vary by employer, so ask what evidence is needed and when it must be submitted.

A medical certificate records a clinician’s opinion about health and work capacity. It may be relevant when illness continues, duties are unsafe, or the workplace specifically asks for clinical documentation. Privacy questions can be discussed during the consultation.

Notify your employer promptly using the usual channel, give the expected return date if you can, and ask whether a certificate is required. If you need one, arrange a GP consultation and describe symptoms, onset, medicines, work demands, and any previous care.

Rest, drink fluids, take prescribed medicines as directed, and monitor your condition. Persistent pressure, exhaustion, poor sleep, or low mood can be signs of burnout or another problem worth discussing rather than managing only through absence messages.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing problems, chest pain, new weakness, confusion, fainting, serious injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or thoughts of harming yourself. Arrange a prompt consultation if symptoms are worsening, lasting longer than expected, causing dehydration, or preventing basic activities or safe work.
