Medical leave certificate for teachers

Teaching can require sustained speaking, supervision, movement, preparation, concentration, and responsibility for pupils. Explain which duties your illness affects and whether symptoms are present only at work or throughout the day. The certificate may state the medically supported leave period without disclosing unnecessary clinical detail to the school.

A clinician may consider infection, voice strain, migraine, injury, anxiety, depression, or burnout. Leave is one possible recommendation; modified duties, reduced demands, treatment, and review may also be discussed.

Book a GP consultation and bring your school’s form or instructions, identification, medicine list, and relevant test results. Describe symptom onset, absence dates, classroom tasks you cannot safely perform, and any safeguarding concern created by reduced alertness or stamina.

Follow the school’s notification process and ask when updated documentation is needed. If your main difficulty is prolonged exhaustion, emotional detachment, or inability to recover between working days, mention these directly and consider information about burnout.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, chest pressure, sudden neurological symptoms, severe allergic reaction, fainting, confusion, or thoughts of self-harm. Prompt assessment is also sensible when fever, vomiting, severe pain, or weakness makes supervising pupils unsafe or prevents drinking and basic care.

Ask whether you need full leave or temporary adjustments, how long the plan should last, when review is needed, what treatment supports recovery, and how to respond if symptoms return during teaching.
