A consultation may include questions about symptoms, examination, medicines, work demands, and recovery. A clinician may recommend rest, adjustments, treatment, or follow-up rather than issuing a certificate for every request.

Arrange a GP consultation and explain when symptoms began, how they affect tasks such as concentrating, standing, driving, or communicating, and what your role requires. Bring identification, current medicine details, and any workplace form. Ask how the certificate will be sent and what to do if you remain unwell when it ends.

Keep your employer updated through the channel they use, while sharing only the health information needed for administration. If work pressure is contributing to exhaustion or low mood, mention it during the appointment; burnout can need attention alongside the paperwork.

Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pressure, sudden weakness, confusion, fainting, heavy bleeding, or thoughts of harming yourself. Do not wait for an administrative appointment when symptoms are rapidly worsening. For less urgent illness, arrange assessment promptly if fever persists, pain is increasing, dehydration is developing, or you cannot manage basic daily activities.
