Meclizine for vomiting

Meclizine is an antihistamine that dampens signals linked with nausea, including signals from the balance organs. It may make you sleepy, reduce concentration, or cause dry mouth and blurred vision. Vomiting can have many causes, including gastroenteritis, food poisoning, migraine, gallstones or pancreatitis, so symptom relief does not establish the cause or mean the illness has resolved.

Use only the dose and timing on your prescription or product instructions. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before taking it if you have glaucoma, breathing disease, difficulty passing urine, or use other medicines that cause drowsiness. Take small sips of oral fluid frequently; when tolerated, choose light foods. Avoid alcohol and driving if you feel sleepy. Note the onset of vomiting, any pain or fever, and whether fluids remain down.

Seek urgent care for blood or green material in vomit, severe or persistent abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, severe headache, or trouble breathing. Get prompt medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, or become increasingly weak. Children, older adults and people with long-term illnesses may become dehydrated quickly and should be assessed early.
