How does measles virus transmission happen?

The virus can remain in an indoor area after the infected person has left, particularly where ventilation is poor. A person can spread measles before the rash is recognised, so exposure may happen during an apparently ordinary visit or commute. People without immunity are at greatest risk of becoming infected.

Transmission is not limited to direct face-to-face contact. Shared air, close household contact, and crowded settings can all matter. A rash, fever, cough, sore eyes, or swollen glands after an exposure should be taken seriously, but these symptoms do not by themselves prove measles.

Check vaccination records for everyone in the household and ask about MMR Vaccination.
