What should you know about measles and varicella?

Chickenpox, or varicella, may begin with fever or tiredness before an itchy rash appears. Spots can become fluid-filled blisters, then dry into crusts while fresh lesions develop elsewhere. Measles has a different illness pattern and does not typically produce the same succession of itchy blisters. A visual description is not enough to confirm either infection, especially after vaccination or when symptoms are unusual. Varicella can later reactivate as shingles, which often follows a narrower area of skin and may hurt or burn.

Take a clear note of when fever and the first spots started, whether new blisters are appearing, and who may have been exposed. Avoid scratching, keep nails short, wash hands, and do not share towels or clothing. Stay away from vulnerable contacts until a clinician gives advice. Arrange a GP consultation for a suspected case, particularly for pregnancy, an infant, immune suppression, severe symptoms, or uncertain vaccination history. Ask a clinician before giving medicines to a child.

Get urgent care for trouble breathing, confusion, severe headache, inability to drink, signs of dehydration, eye involvement, rapidly worsening fever, or severe pain. Blisters with spreading warmth, pus, or increasing redness need prompt review because broken skin can become infected. Call ahead before attending if a contagious infection is possible.
