What should you know about measles face?

The rash may appear after a period of fever, cough, a runny nose or red, watery eyes. It can look like flat or slightly raised red-brown spots that join together as they extend from the hairline or face towards the neck and trunk. A rash alone cannot confirm measles because other infections and skin conditions can look similar. Measles is highly contagious, so suspected illness deserves prompt clinical advice and distance from people who may be vulnerable.

Call a GP or clinic before attending and mention the facial rash and any recent exposure or travel. This allows the service to arrange assessment without placing other patients at risk. Until you receive advice, stay away from school, work and shared indoor spaces, avoid close contact, and do not share towels or utensils. Rest, drink fluids, and use fever relief only as directed for the person’s age and medical history. Keep a note of when the fever and rash began.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, unusual sleepiness, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration, a stiff neck, or a rapidly worsening condition. A baby, pregnant person, or anyone with a weakened immune system should receive prompt advice after possible exposure or new symptoms. Do not arrive unannounced at a waiting room when measles is possible; call first.
